Calle 13 is the name of a Puerto Rican band formed by stepbrothers Rene Perez (vocalist and songwriter) and Eduardo Cabra (keyboards, vocals, bass sounds producer). Rene and Eduardo -who like to call themselves “Resident” and “Visitant”, respectively- have won the Latin Grammy Award ten times and the Grammy Award twice, in categories such as Best new artist, Best urban music album, Best reggaeton album and others.
Calle 13’s music is commonly considered as reggaeton. However, the band have distanced from this style fusing elements from jazz, bossa nova, salsa, cumbia, tango, electronica and others to create their own personal “urban style”, as Resident prefers to call it. Their lyrics are well-known for treating a wide and eclectic variety of subjects -from pop culture to politics and social issues- in a controversial and irreverent manner.
