Your Mix Fix: Villa Diamante
The word mixtape has plenty of different interpretations. It used to be that mixtapes were actually DJ sets recorded on cassette tapes, but with the coming of the digital music age, the name remained the same, but the definition expanded. Nowadays, people call mixtapes many different things, some of which are not necessarily mixed and most of which were never taped. Here we try to cover them all. In this column, Juan Data gives you a worthy one every week.

MIXTAPE: ZZK Mixtape Vol. XIII

ZZK collective founding member and renown mash-up artist Villa Diamante just put together this new official ZZK mixtape to celebrate the release of Future Sounds of Buenos Aires, a compilation that just came out. It’s pressed in a beautiful double vinyl LP and it’s a must-have for all ñu-cumbia lovers.

However, only a couple of tracks included in this mixtape came from said compilation. The rest are mostly bootleg mash-ups made by Villa Diamante himself, which for obvious reasons never get officially released, and you can only listen to them on mixtapes like this one. So yeah, you might have heard of a track or two in this set, but most of them are exclusives.

As a surprise bonus, the mixtape’s outro features a snippet of a hilarious interview with Slavoj Zizek, the modern Slovene philosopher after whom the nightclub in Buenos Aires, and in term the record label, where named. You ever wondered what this respected social theorist thinks about his last name being used by a cumbia party? Just listen to this mixtape all the way to the end.

By the way, ZZK’s other founder, El G, will be touring the US during the month of January to help promote the release of Future Sounds of Buenos Aires, dates will be announced soon.
