Your Mix Fix: DJ Nim

JUANThe word mixtape has plenty of different interpretations. It used to be that mixtapes were actually DJ sets recorded on cassette tapes, but with the coming of the digital music age, the name remained the same, but the definition expanded. Nowadays, people call mixtapes many different things, some of which are not necessarily mixed and most of which were never taped. Here we try to cover them all. In this column, Juan Data gives you a worthy one every week.

DJ: DJ Nim

MIXTAPE: ZZK Tour Mixtape DJ Nim

Long before ZZK Records or events in the Zizek nightclub ever existed, DJ Nim was already hip to the ñu-cumbia that was cooking below the levels of Buenos Aires’ underground. In fact, it was him who first introduced El-G this specific sound and many of the artists that would eventually become the solid foundation of the ZZK familia.

Still, for some reason, Nim (A.K.A. Guillermo Canale) opted for the low profile and remained at a prudent distance from the spotlight while the rest of the ZZK roster toured the world while unleashing a ñu-cumbia phenomenon of global magnitude. In the five years since the creation of the visionary record label, this is the first mixtape he released to the public, at least that I’m aware of.

Made with the explicit intention of promoting the current ZZK tour through Europe, the mixtape is a pretty straight-forward set of exclusives and unreleased tracks from the label’s catalog with a couple of Nim’s own remixes, all in just 30 minutes.
